LS Polls 2024: 5,472 Elderly and Disabled Voters in Delhi Opt for Home Voting in This Election

New Delhi (18/05/2024): The Chief Electoral Office (CEO) of Delhi has started a home voting facility for elderly voters and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in all 07 Parliamentary Constituency for the General Elections to Lok Sabha-2024. This facility will continue till May 24 marking the first time such a facility has been made available in Lok Sabha Election. The home voting

facility is available to voters above 85 years of age and PwDs offering them the option to cast their votes from their homes.

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer P. Krishnamurthy highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “By providing the home voting facility to Senior Citizens and PwDs, we express our care and respect towards them. Our goal is to make the electoral process accessible to all and to encourage greater participation.”

In Delhi, 5,472 voters who are either over the age of 85 or Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) have successfully filled out Form 12D, enabling them to avail of the home voting facility in the GELS-2024, and if they choose to vote at the polling booth instead, 8,000 volunteers and 4,000 wheelchairs have been stationed at polling locations to further facilitate their participation.

Voting from home takes place with involvement of a full contingent of polling staff and security personnel with secrecy of voting diligently maintained. With this, ECI has taken another decisive step towards facilitating a more equitable and representative democracy, where every citizen’s voice matters, regardless of physical limitations or age.

A dedicated team of polling officials and security personnel will visit the voter’s residence to collect their votes, ensuring voters are notified in advance to prepare for the visit. The advance BLOs visit, SMS notifications to intimate about the scheduled home voting days will further enhance convenience and accessibility. The entire process will be videographed to ensure transparency.

This initiative by the Chief Electoral Office of Delhi is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive electoral environment, enabling elder citizens and PwDs to exercise their right to vote in a safe, dignified, and accessible manner.
