Man Shot At Allegedly By Cop Near Delhi; Caste Was Reason, Claims Family

New Delhi : A group of men, on way home from a family function, were shot at by policemen in Noida, near Delhi, their family has said. Two of the men were injured. The condition of one is serious and he is at the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital. After a preliminary inquiry, the police suspended four of its staff members, including an inspector, claiming it was a case of personal enmity.

One of the family members said they had gone to Berhampur, in nearby Ghaziabad, for an engagement ceremony.

"My elder brother, uncle and two friends were in the car," said Vajeshni Yadav. Jitender Yadav, the one who was seriously injured, had gone to drop them. On the way, around 10.30 pm, four policemen came in a jeep and stopped them. They then started hitting and abusing Jitender.

"When Jitendra asked what was their fault, the police said, ‘You are a Yadav right’? Jitender asked ‘Is it a crime to be a Yadav’? The cop said, ‘let me teach you…’."

The policeman, he said, had come to Jitender’s shoe store few days ago. But he had refused to pay, which led to an altercation.

Mr Yadav said the police have taken to targeting young men in the area, staging fake encounters to get promotions. "These are all farmers, not criminals. The police must be taught lessons in law," he said.
