Delhi: 7 Feared Drowned During Durga Idol Immersions

New Delhi, September 30: At least seven devotees are feared dead after they were drowned in two different parts of Delhi during Durga idol immersion on Saturday evening. The bodies of six of the victims were fished out soon after the incident, while search operations are on for one missing teenager.

The first incident took place on the banks of Yamuna in Chauhan Patti in north-east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar area around 11 am. Police officials said, soon after they have received the first call, soon after which they rushed to the spot.

  Among the victims, two of them were identified. A 13-year-old boy Himanshu and his friend were among the dead. Eyewitnesses present at the spot said that they think their feet slipped while they were playing along with the river.

A search operation was launched by the divers and the rescue teams deployed there for such tragedies which have now started repeating on a regular basis. The two bodies were fished out in few minutes and sent for post-mortem.

The second accident took place near Palla Village in outer Delhi where six teenagers were swept away by the string current. Two of them managed to swim to safety.

Fire Brigade officials said that they received a call about this incident at around 4:30 pm. The bodies of three youths were fished out and a search in on for the fourth missing youth.

The police said that the victims were aged between 13 and 16 and it was later found that they were residents of East Punjabi Bagh.
