Death Toll in Mexico Quake Rises to 224, School Building Collapse Leaves 21 Children Dead

Mexico City, September 20: Twenty one children were killed after a school building toppled following a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Mexico on Wednesday, the government said. Many buildings were reduced to rubble and at least 224 people were killed in the quake.

While thousands fled into the streets in panic, many stayed to help rescue those trapped. Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said buildings fell at 44 places in Mexico City alone as high-rises across the city swayed sickeningly.

The quake is the deadliest in Mexico since a 1985 quake on the same date killed thousands. It came less than two weeks after another powerful quake caused 90 deaths in the country’s south.
