Govt removes ‘remarriage’ clause from monetary allowances to widows

New Delhi: The government on Tuesday removed the condition of remarriage with the dead husband’s brother for a widow to avail of the monetary benefits of gallantry awards.

The decision came after several representations were received from various quarters to remove the condition of the widow’s remarriage with the late husband’s brother for continuation of the monetary allowance, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

Under the revised condition, the allowance shall be admissible to the recipient of the award and on his death to his widow lawfully married by a valid ceremony. The widow will continue to receive the allowance until her death.

Earlier, the condition was that the allowance shall be admissible to the recipient of the award and on his death to his widow if she married the late husband’s brother and lived a ‘communal life’ with the living heir eligible for family pension.
