WHY WE CELEBRATE REPUBLIC DAY

As we celebrate our Republic Day, here is short history of why we celebrate our Republic Day on 26-January.

Prior to the arrival of young leaders like Nehru, Sardar Patel & Subhash Chandra Bose, aim of our ‘Independence’ was to get a Dominion Status from Britain, In which British Monarch would remain constitutional head of the state. (Like in Canada) but Congress during its Lahore session of December 1929 elected young Nehru as President, and the Congress voted for "Purna Swaraj" (complete independence) as opposed to a dominion status for India. A resolution was passed, fixing the last Sunday of January, 1930, to be celebrated as our Independence Day, which incidentally fell on the 26th. On that day, Jawahar Lal Nehru hoisted the tricolour on the banks of Ravi in Lahore.

Years later when India achieved her freedom & Drafting Committee was appointed to make our constitution, it tabled our constitution in Constituent Assembly in November 1949, but deliberations in Constituent assembly went on till 24-Jan-1950, & to honour 26-Jan, Leaders waited for 2 days to finally enforce our Constitution & We became Sovereign Republic Of India !

Happy #RepublicDay to all of you !
