New Delhi, Jan 4: Agreeing on the Opposition’s demand, the government is likely to send the landmark triple talaq bill to a Select Committee for review, suggested media reports. If this happens, a parliament committee will be constituted that will scrutinise the triple talaq bill and suggest changes. The government is in a minority in Rajya Sabha and also doesn’t have the support on this bill of friendly parties.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 seeks to criminalise instant divorce, triple talaq. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with most of the leading parties in the Opposition, including the Congress, voting in favour, but with caveats.
A united Opposition, led by the Congress party, on Wednesday, took on the Centre over the bill in the Rajya Sabha. While the government wanted a debate on the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill in the Rajya Sabha, the opposition wanted it to be sent to a Select Committee for scrutiny before it is a made a law.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said the opposition wanted the bill to be sent to a Select Committee that would help make it strong by offering support to Muslim women and by removing the criminality clause.
