New Delhi, Dec 12: A Class 11 student of the Rajkiya Sarvoday Kanya Vidyalaya in East Delhi drowned in Australia’s Adelaide as she was washed away by waves while she was taking selfies with her friends at the beach. Four other girls were rescued. A meritorious student, the girl was a talented footballer and had gone to the country to attend the Pacific School Games.
Nitisha was a bright student. Her father Puran Singh Negi said their house was filled with her medals as she was an athlete before taking up football four years ago. The family had come to see off the girl at IGI airport on November 30. On Saturday, she had talked to her father over phone and said that the matches were over and they were preparing to come home. However, a few hours later, they received the news of her death.
The father informed TOI that the office of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had contacted them and promised all support. He said that the team coordinator had told them that the girls had gone into deep sea while taking selfies and a wave carried them away.
“They could not take care of my daughter. I want strict action taken against the officials responsible,” Negi told the Times of India. Assistant secretary of the School Games Federation of India, Kanhaiya Gurjar said that someone was definitely responsible for the accident.
