New Delhi, August 20: Central Universities in the country are functioning with over 53 per cent vacant posts, a report claimed. As per it, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) are also short of academic staff and has more than 35 per cent posts vacant. Most of these centrally funded institutions, including the National Institute of Technology (NIT) are functioning with over one-third vacant faculty positions.
Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar announced a major recruitment drive across campuses and observed that the new central universities are the worst hit with 53.28 per cent vacancies. NITs have 47 per cent vacancies, while the old and new IITs have over 35 per cent vacancies, he said.
In a bid to fill-up the vacancies, Javadekar said the ministry is considering re-employment and inviting industry experts. He declared that by the end of the year, the aim is to fill up at least 75 per cent of the vacancies.
The HRD Ministry also said that out of 300 vacancies in Jawaharlal Nehru University, 200 have been filled and the rest will be filled in soon. A similar drive will begin in the University of Delhi as well, which has 54.75 per cent vacancies against permanent positions.
The worst hit central university is believed to be the one in Haryana, with 75.11 per cent vacancies as on April 1, 2017, quoted HRD record. The University of Allahabad also reportedly has 64 per cent vacancies.
Old IITs have recorded 39 per cent vacancies, while the new ones have 36 per cent positions vacant. 14 out 20 old NITs have more than 40 per cent vacancies.
