Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 19, 2023: The National Commission for Women in collaboration with the Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University organized a One Day North East Region Law Review Consultation on “Rights of Muslim Women – Reviewing Muslim Personal Law” at NEHU, Shillong.
The conference was organised on 16th January, 2023, as part of Five Regional Consultations on the subject, with the aim of incorporating viewpoints from diverse sectors and stakeholders from different regions in the process of suggesting comprehensive changes in the law relating to the subject to protect the interest of the Muslim Women.
The programme was attended by experts on the subject and panellists from different states in the North Eastern Region viz., Patricia Mukhim, Dr. Iamonlang Syiem, Prof. H. Askari, Dr. Shariffudin, Zulfi Ali, Jamima Marak, Fatima Nongbri from Meghalaya, Prof. Zoengpari from Mizoram, Dr. Sabrina Iqbal Sircar, Dr. Nazrana Ahmed, Dr. Mujibur Rahman, Dr.Ashma Begum, Yousuf Choudhury, Dr. Anjuman Ara from the state of Assam, Dr. Mostafa Kamal and Dr. Salim Shah from Tripura and Juno Rahman and Ipham Sharmila from Manipur.
The Vice Chancellor’s nominee, Prof. C.A. Mawlong was the Chief Guest on the occasion and the valedictory session was chaired by Prof. Desmond L. Kharmawphlang. The Programme was coordinated by Prof. Jyoti J. Mozika, Department of Law, NEHU. Dr. Naveen Kumar, Head In Charge of the Department of Law, NEHU was also present.
On behalf of the National Commission for Women, Priya Bhardwaj, Legal Counsellor, NCW attended the event. The program was marked by brainstorming sessions on various aspects of Muslim personal law like marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, legitimacy, age of marriage, maintenance etc.
There was divided opinion on whether the Muslim Personal Law should be codified with the majority in favour of it. The role of education and the need to change the perception of the community especially the conservative partriarchal culture of the society was also highlighted.
