PM Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump Discussed Spirit of H1B Visa Without Using The Word: Sushma Swaraj
New Delhi, July 20: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump had extensive discussion on the spirit of H1B visa during the former’s visit to the United States. The remarks came as Congress MP Anand Sharma raised the matter in Rajya Sabha asking the government to be sensitive to the concerns of IT professionals.
“Without using the word H1B visa there was extensive discussion on its spirit, between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Proud to say that the Prime Minister was able to make President Trump agree that Indian skilled professionals are contributing greatly to American economy,” Sushma informed the Rajya Sabha.
Raising the matter in the Upper House, Sharma said that there was no mention of H1B visas or Indian IT professionals in the joint statement after the Prime Minister’s US visit. “I request the government to be sensitive to concerns,” Sharma said.
During Modi’s visit to the US, first after Trump took over the office, the issue of H1B visa did not find mention in the joint statement, the most sought-after by Indian IT professionals. There have been growing concerns in India over the crackdown on H1B visas in the wake of layoffs by the IT sector companies.
