Dogs are India’s most searched pets; Delhi sees maximum demand: Just Dial Consumer Insights

Mumbai, February 22, 2022: Indians love to have the affable Labrador and Pomeranians as their favourite pets, but their penchant for birds and cats as pets is also growing at a rapid rate, reports the latest Just Dial Consumer Report.

 

Latest Just Dial Consumer Report suggests that in the pet category, dogs were the most searched pet contributing to 66% of the demand on the platform. Demand for birds was second with 18% followed by cats (9%) and rabbits (3.5%). Searches for hamsters also picked up across the country indicating a new trend among pet lovers. 

 

Overall, searches for pets in India have grown YOY by 13% and demand in Tier-II cities stayed slightly ahead of Tier-I. However, demand for pet dogs in Tier-II cities was 50% higher than Tier-I and that for cats was 41% more. But that for birds, rabbits, and hamsters remained at par. 

 

Commenting on the trend, Mr. Prasun Kumar, CMO, Just Dial, said: “It is interesting to see that searches across India for pets up by 13% with demand for dogs & cats in Tier-II cities being higher than Tier – I.  Largely the pet market was offline, but the recent search trend on Just Dial indicates that even in Tier-II towns and cities, users prefer to do their search online. This has resulted in 35% more searches in Tier-II vis-à-vis Tier-I and it is a testament to the platform’s credibility for a wide range of products and services.”

 

Among dogs, searches for Labradors topped the list contributing to 26% of the searches while Pomeranians were second with 21%, German Shepherds were third with 19%. Rare breed like Siberian Husky saw a YOY rise of 36% in popularity. Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru were the top-3 Tier-I cities that generated maximum demand for pet dogs. While demand in Delhi and Bengaluru remained stable, Hyderabad saw a YOY rise of 36%. Lucknow, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Bhopal, Indore, were the top-5 Tier-II cities that saw maximum demand for pet dogs.

 

Love Birds dominated almost 36% of the searches followed by Parrots (17%) for pet birds. Among Parrots, the most sought after were Cockatiel Parrot, African Grey Parrot, and Macaw Parrot. Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru were the top-3 Tier-I cities generating maximum demand for pet birds. Delhi and Mumbai contributed to almost 50% of the searches that were generated from Tier-I cities. Coimbatore, Jammu, Lucknow, Jaipur, and Patna saw maximum demand from Tier-II cities for pet birds.  

 

Persian Cats were the most searched pet cats with almost 90% of the searches but there were searches also for rare breeds like Siberian Cat, British Shorthair Cat, Burmese Cat, Abyssinian Cat, and Bengal Cat. Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad generated maximum demand for cats as a pet among Tier-I cities while Srinagar, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, and Nashik were the top-5 Tier-II cities with most of the searches. 

 

Holland Lop Rabbit, Californian Rabbit, Netherland Dwarf Rabbit, and Flemish Giant Rabbit were the most searched pet rabbits on the platform. Most of the demand from Tier-I cities was generated from the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad while Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Patna, and Indore were the top-5 Tier-II cities generating most of the searches for pet rabbits.  

 

Delhi topped the list in demand for Hamsters as pets followed by Mumbai and Chennai among Tier-I cities while Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Goa, Guwahati, and Indore were the top-5 in Tier-II cities.
