Railway train ticket cancellation, refund rules relaxed: Explained in 10 points

To avoid over crowding at railway stations amid coronavirus outbreak in the country, Indian Railways has relaxed train ticket cancellation rules. This relaxation is for train journey between 21st March to 21st June. Indian Railways has advised passengers to avoid non-essential travel and sudden crowding of trains or the refund counters in view of rising coronavirus cases in the country, which according to latest figure has crossed 300.

New train ticket refund rules in 10 points:

Cancellation of train e-ticket remains the same as passenger does not need to come to station for refund of ticket. Cancellation of e-tickets can be done online.

The relaxation in cancellation rules is applicable on PRS counter generated tickets.

For trains cancelled by Railways for journey period 21 March – 21 June 2020, refund across counter can be taken on submission of ticket up to three months from date of journey.

Earlier, the time limit was 3 days/ 72 hours (excluding day of journey).

When train is not cancelled but passenger does not want to perform journey, TDR ( Ticket Deposit Receipt) can be filed within 3 months from date of journey at the station.

TDR can be submitted to CCO (Chief claims officer)/ CCM (Chief commercial manager), Refund / Claims office for getting the refund with 60 days of filing of TDR subject to verification from Train chart. (Instead of extant rule of 10 days)

For passengers who want cancel ticket through 139 IVR/SMS service they can get refund within 3 months from date of journey. In this method, passengers will be given a one-time password on their mobile.

Only after verification of the OTP, cancellation will be processed.

Earlier, the time limit was up to scheduled departure of the train.
