What Does The Odd-Even Rule Mean In Delhi?

With the air-quality deteriorating in Delhi rapidly, it was crucial for the government to re-implement the Odd-Even scheme so as to curb the air pollution in the state.

According to this scheme, the odd-number vehicles are allowed to drive only on odd-numbered dates and even-numbered vehicles on even-numbered days. The purpose is to limit the number of vehicles on roads as they cause air pollution. However, there are exemptions to this rule that include two-wheelers, women and women accompanied by children aged below 12. Ambulances, private vehicles carrying school children, electric vehicles, defence and enforcement vehicles are also an exempted from the rule. Additionally, vehicles that belong to VIPs such as the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, state governors, Chief Justice of India and the speakers of the Lok Sabha are exempted from this rule. But, the vehicles owned by Delhi government ministers, the Chief Minister and the CNG vehicles are not exempted from this rule.
