New Delhi: Holding the state governments responsible for mob lynching the Supreme Court (SC) said that mob lynching is a crime no matter what the motive is. It further said that it is a law and order issue hence it is the responsibility of state governments.
Supreme Court said that lynching is a crime whether it happens as a result of cow vigilantism or because people believe someone is a child abductor.
While reserving its verdict on pleas seeking directions to formulate guidelines to curb such violence the apex court said no one can take the law into their hands.
It must be recalled that on September 6 last year, the Supreme Court had asked all the states to take stern measures to stop violence in the name of cow protection. It had sought a response from Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments on a plea seeking contempt action for not following its order to take stern steps to stop violence in the name of cow vigilantism. The contempt petition was filed by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, saying the three states have not complied with the apex court order of September 6 last year.
Besides cow vigilantism, mob-lynching has claimed several lives due to social media rumours about child-lifters.
