Kalpana Chawla was an Indian American astronaut and the first woman of Indian origin in space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997, as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. In 2003 she had an untimely death, she was one of the seven crew members who had a fatal incident in the Space Shuttle. Chawla is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honour.
She was honored with INDIAN WOMEN ACHIEVERS AWARD by the President of India on January 20, 2018 at New Delhi.
