New Delhi, December 15: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday indicated on stepping down from all party posts and is likely to retire. Sonia has led the Congress for 19 years and rode the party to power at the Centre twice — 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The development came a day before Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi will formally take the party’s charge.
Apart from being the Congress president, Sonia is UPA chairperson and head of the Congress Parliamentary board as well. With Sonia’s retirement, questions are being raised on who will lead the UPA and contest from her Parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli. She was the longest serving Congress president but was keeping unwell for quite sometime.
The 132-year-old party has hinted that Sonia will continue to guide the party workers. But time and again, questions are also being raised on Rahul’s leadership skills and how he will reach out to allies.
