Newborn Declared Dead, Wrapped in Plastic: Delhi Max Hospital’s License Cancelled

New Delhi, Dec 7: The Delhi government has cancelled the license of the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh over the negligence in the newborn death. “We have cancelled the license of Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh, the negligence in the newborn death case was unacceptable,” Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. A premature baby was wrongly declared dead by Max Super Specialty Hospital last week.

Delhi Health Minister had on December 2 said that if the hospital was found guilty of medical negligence in its probe, it’s licence could be cancelled. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association has slammed the AAP government for revoking Max Hospital’s license. Calling the decision of cancelling the license as a harsh one, it said,”Mistakes by doctors are part of learning curve.”

The newborn was one of the prematurely born twins (other baby was stillborn) delivered on the morning of November 30 at Max Hospital where the mother was brought from a nursing home in Paschim Vihar. The hospital had handed over the premature twins in a polythene bag declaring them dead. However, later the family found one of them alive before the last rites.

A three-member panel formed by the Delhi government had earlier found Max Hospital guilty of not following prescribed medical norms in dealing with newborn infants. “The panel in its report found the hospital guilty of not having followed prescribed medical norms in dealing with newborn infants,” the source said.

As per the panel’s report, no Electrocardiogram (ECG) tracings were done to check if the child was alive. The body was handed over to the parent without written instructions, in a plastic bag.

Under fire, Max Healthcare had decided to terminate the services of two doctors allegedly involved in the case of a premature baby being wrongly declared dead, the group said in a statement.
