New Delhi, Nov 25: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suraj Pal Amu on Saturday lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee for extending her support to Padmavati. Amu said women with devilish traits should not forget the treatment meted out to mythological character ‘Shupranakha’ by ‘Laxman’. Amu said, “Women with devilish character should not forget Laxman had cut Shupranakha’s nose. Mamta [Banerjee] should not forget it. “
Extending support to makers of Padmavati, Mamta Banerjee had said she would welcome “Padmavati” director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his team to the state and make special arrangements for the film’s premiere and release. “If they (Bhansali and producer) cannot release Padmavati in any other state, we will make special arrangements for it in our state. Bengal will be very happy and Bengal will be proud to do that. We will take care of it.Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his Padmavati team are welcome in our state,” she said.
Amu, known for his threatening language, had earlier announced a bounty of Rs 10 crore for beheading Padmavati actress Deepika Padukone and its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He had also threatened actor Ranveer Singh to break his legs after Singh had expressed his unhappiness at the mounting protests by fringe groups like Rajput Karni Sena.
Based on the mythical character of Rani Padmini, Padmavati has enraged members of Karni Sena who threatened to chop off the nose of Deepika Padukone. The controversy over the film erupted soon after the shooting began in various parts of the country. The tensions reached its zenith when several forts in Rajasthan were closed in protest of the film.
