Age gap between spouses may affect marriage satisfaction

New York: While men and women both tend to experience marital satisfaction with younger spouses, the satisfaction is likely to fade over time if there is a significant age gap between the partners, researchers have found.

The findings showed that for the couples with a big age gap between the partners, the initial satisfaction tends to erode rapidly after six to ten years of marriage.

However, when paired with a younger spouse, men and women both showed greater marital satisfaction.

“We find that men who are married to younger wives are the most satisfied and men who are married to older wives are the least satisfied,” said Terra McKinnish, Professor at University of Colorado Boulder.

“Women are also particularly dissatisfied when they’re married to older husbands and particularly satisfied if they’re married to younger husbands,” McKinnish added.

One reason for this decline could be how the age difference between spouses affects the couple’s ability to respond to negative economic shocks such as a job loss.

The study found that marriages with large age gap between partners are also less resilient in the face of economic downturns relative to their similarly-aged counterparts.

Similarly-aged couples are more in sync on life decisions that affect both partners (having children, general spending habits) and thus may be better equipped to adjust to a negative financial shock.

By contrast, an unexpected financial shake-up could expose underlying tensions and mismatches in couples with a larger age gap, McKinnish said.

For the study, published in the Journal of Population Economics, the team examined 13 years’ worth of longitudinal data from 2001.

The sample initially comprised of 7,682 households containing 19,914 individuals and participants are re-surveyed every year with questions that measure various aspects of life satisfaction.

Woman hockey player found dead on rail tracks in #Haryana

A 20-year-old international hockey player from Haryana allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday night by coming in front of a train at Rewari Railway Station.

The deceased, Jyoti Gupta, was a resident of Sonepat district. Her body was found from the tracks by locals, who informed the cops.

Gupta, a forward hockey player, had represented the country in the Asian Games and participated in many state and national level tournaments. Her coach informed that she was to leave for Bengaluru for a training camp next week.

Meanwhile, the police said Jyoti had left home on Wednesday telling her parents that she was going to the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, to get the spelling of her name corrected in her certificate.

Her family said Jyoti had called them in the evening and told them that her bus has broken down. She added that she will reach home soon, the family said.

However, following this, she reportedly stopped answering their calls.

Late night, the police found Jyoti’s body at Rewari Railway Station along with her mobile phone that was ringing. The cops answered the calls and spoke to her parents and could thus identify her.

The police said the driver of a Jaipur-bound train in his statement said that Jyoti died as she came in front of his train.

However, Jyoti’s family refuses to believe that she could commit suicide.

Joint Project between #NASA and #ISRO

ISRO and NASA are working towards realisation of NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission by 2021.
In NISAR mission, NASA is responsible for development of L-band SAR and ISRO is responsible for development of S-band SAR. The L & S band SAR will be integrated with ISRO’s spacecraft and launched on-board India’s GSLV. The total cost of the project includes ISRO’s work share cost of about Rs. 788.00 Cr and the cost of JPL’s work share of about USD 808 million. After the launch in 2021, the plan of action includes (i) calibration of instruments & validation of data products; (ii) development of science acquisition plan; (iii) development of data processing procedures & applications; and (iv) conduct of outreach activities in research institutes & academia.
NISAR employs a futuristic SweepSAR technique, which enables very wide swath of more than 200 km and very high resolution of the order of 5-10m. The L & S band microwave data obtained from this satellite will be useful for variety of application, which include estimating agricultural biomass over full duration of crop cycle; assessing soil moisture; monitoring of floods & oil slicks; coastal erosion, coastline changes; assessment of mangroves; surface deformation studies, ice sheet dynamics etc.
ISRO and NASA have a framework agreement for cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes signed in 2008. Under this framework agreement, ISRO and NASA have executed an implementing arrangement for cooperation in NISAR mission, which is valid until 2034 and provides scope for joint activities on science & applications of NISAR data after the launch.

This could be the first instance of a GST Council official being arrested by the central investigating agency.
