After Delhi Government’s Notice, 150 Private Schools Start Refunding Excess Fees

New Delhi, August 26: More than 150 private schools have started refunding excess fees and at least 70 schools have submitted the respective amounts to the high court in Delhi. The remaining schools have started the process of issuing cheques to the parents. On Monday, the Delhi government had served a notice to 449 schools, asking them to refund excess fees they charge for admission from parents. DPS Vasant Kunj, DPS Dwarka, KR Mangalam World School, Summerfields School, Sanskriti School have started making the payment to the court.

The process of asking the private schools to refund excess money was suggested by Justice Anil Dev Committee. In its notice, the government threatened to take over the management of the schools if they don’t pay the amount to the parents. Schools like Oxford Public School in Nehru Nagar and Smt Misri Devi Gyan Niketan School in Deenpur asked the parents to submit their bank details so that they can transfer the excess money.

“The frequency with which these schools are processing the refund is encouraging. But the exact number of schools cannot be ascertained because many are sending cheques to parents directly,” said Advocate Khagesh Jha, who is involved in this case, reported Times of India. However, he added that since many schools are sending cheques directly to the parents, the exact number of schools cannot be determined. However, the government has not revealed anything about the number of schools refunding excess fees but the officials said the process of refunding has already started.

DPS Mathura Road and Springdales Pusa Road schools are waiting for the decision in the high court before refunding the excess fees. The principal DPS Mathura Road school Manohar Lal told TOI that there is a PIL that they have filed in the court and they are awaiting the decision. The principal further said, “We have the amount ready with us. The hearing is next month, and action will be taken in the direction of the court”.
