#Gorakhpur Tragedy: Japanese Encephalitis Claims Lives of Six More, Report

Gorakhpur, August 15: Six more children are reported to be dead in Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College after battling with Japanese Encephalitis since Saturday. With this, the toll has neared 70 in the last few days. The disastrous news report came on a day when the country is celebrating its 71st Independence Day. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday mourned the death of 63 children died in the same hospital last week.

A report on Monday said that between August 12 and 14, six people died due to Japanese Encephalitis– most of the deceased are children, reported the Economic Times.

The NHRC has sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the death of several children at a state-run hospital in Gorakhpur, observing that it indicated “gross callousness” on part of the health administration.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asked the state Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report in four weeks on the steps taken for relief and rehabilitation of the affected families as well as the action taken against the guilty officers, the NHRC today said.
