Delhi per capita income likely 3x of rest of India, but 17 lakh people are still below poverty line

Despite being the city with highest per capita income in the country, 17 lakh people in Delhi are still below the poverty line with an income less than Rs 1,134 per month. However, the capital city’s average income is expected to increase to about Rs 3,03,073 per annum in 2016-17 which is a whooping hike of 10.76 per cent to that of Rs 2,73,618 during the last fiscal. This is three times more than rest of India. As per a report by Indian Express, the number comes on the back of 2016-17 Delhi Statistical Handbook that refers to the data from 2011-12 and estimates that as many as 17 lakh people – 9.91 per cent of the total population of Delhi – lives below the poverty line.
