Chief Minister of Delhi & chairman, DJB announces slew of measures for water augmentation

Delhi to adopt Singapore model for water treatment (NEWater) 200 water bodies to be rejuvenated

New Delhi: 10/07/2018

Chief Minister of Delhi & Chairman, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Sh. Arvind Kejriwal on July 10 (Tuesday) inspected the Coronation Plant in Burari. He was accompanied by Vice Chairman DJB, CEO DJB and other officials of the Delhi Jal Board.

After taking a stock of the project, Sh. Kejriwal addressed the media and announced a slew of measures being taken to augment water supply in Delhi.

· Delhi to adopt Singapore model for water treatment (NEWater): Water from STPs treated to high quality level will be taken to Palla and released in Yamuna Channel. Water will then flow and travel up to Wazirabad. In the process of travel, water will further purify in a natural manner. Then it will be lifted at Wazirabad and treated further at Wazirabad WTP. After final treatment at Wazirabd, the water will be supplied to households as potable water. These are the datelines for phase-wise rollout of the water treatment process:

Ø By June 2019, less than one year from now, pipeline and pumping station would be ready and then the treated water would start going to Palla, from where it will travel to Wazirabad through the Yamuna Channel.

Ø Phase I would start in June 2019 (70 MGD): 70 MGD from Coronation STP would be sent to Wazirabad through Palla. Then the treated 70 MGD water would be supplied to households as potable water.

Ø Phase II would start in Dec 2019 (110 MGD: 70 MGD + 40 MGD): 40 MGD from Rithala STP would start going to Wazirabad and would be supplied as potable water after due process of treatment.

Ø Phase III would start in June 2020 (150 MGD: 70 MGD + 40 MGD + 40 MGD): Another 40 MGD from Rithala STP would be sent to Wazirabad in the same process to further augment the production of clean water through the new process.

Ø So by June 2020, a total of 150 MGD (70 MGD + 40 MGD + 40MGD) water will be sent to Wazirabad via Palla for treatment and supply.

Ø Even if 30 MGD of water percolates in the ground during the process, a total of 120 MGD potable water would be ready for supply by June 2020.

· Dwarka WTP: Water which comes from Haryana is treated at Wazirabad. Now after water from Coronation and Rithala will be sent to Wazirabad through Palla, the Haryana water will be treated at the proposed 50 MGD WTP at Dwarka. A new WTP is proposed at Dwarka and will be completed by February 2020.

· Consultant hired for recycle & reuse of treated water generated at 36-STPs: Consultant has been hired to chalk out plan for recycling & reuse of water from the other 36-STPs in Delhi on the lines of the recycling of the treated water from Coronation and Rithala STPs. This once done will produce at-least 200 MGD of additional water. Currently the water from these STPs goes in river Yamuna.

· New Borewells at Palla: In all seventy new bore-wells will be made in Palla, which would produce 15 MGD of extra water.

· Conserving Yamuna Water during rainy season: Consultant has been hired to chalk out a plan to conserve the water in Yamuna during monsoon. The water level goes up by more than 10 times. The consultant will submit a methodology to conserve the additional water during rains.

· Rain Water Harvesting: Consultant has also been hired to suggest best methods for rain water harvesting in Delhi.

· 200 water bodies to be rejuvenated: DJB has planned to rejuvenate 200 water bodies in Delhi. Landscaping around the water bodies is also planned. The water will percolate to the ground, it will improve the ground water levels in the vicinity which can be extracted and used for various purposes.
