Jammu And Kashmir: 5 Army Jawans Missing After Avalanches Hit Forward Posts

 

Srinagar, Dec 12: Five Army jawans are missing as avalanches hit two forward posts on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. While two soldiers are missing in Kupwara’s Nowgam sector, three are untraceable in Bandipora district’s Gurez sector.

Three Army jawans have gone missing after avalanche hit Mani Post in Gurez sector. The missing jawans are from Rashtriya Rifles and were stationed at Baktore. Authorities are having difficulty in carrying out the search and rescue operation due to continuous snowfall.

Meanwhile, it was reported that a 28-year-old Army porter was feared dead in avalanche in Tulail. The porter was identified as Ghulam Mohammad Khan. The avalanche was triggered by fresh snowfall and rains. The jawan was returning from a forward post in Gurez sector.

Earlier in January, 14 soldiers had died in twin avalanches that hit an Army camp in Gurez sector.Three soldiers had died in April in Batalik sector when the avalanche hit their post. While two soldiers succumbed to their injuries, the body of the third soldier was recovered later.

Heavy snowfall was recorded on the LoC in Gurez sector since Monday evening. The snowfall continued on Tuesday morning.
