To Get Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi Back, Passports Cancelled: 10 Facts

Here are the 10 updates on this story:

  1. The market price of residential and commercial properties that include a solar plant linked to Nirav Modi and his firms seized by the ED has been put at over 523 crores. This, according to the ED’s valuation of assets, takes the total value of the jewellery, gold, silver, diamonds and other assets in excess of 6,300 crores. The agency has also recovered nearly 10,000 imported watches stacked in 176 steel almirahs, 158 boxes and 60 plastic containers.
  2. Nirav Modi allegedly worked with bank officials to illegally obtain Letters of Undertaking, which were cashed overseas from different banks. The diamantaire and his family left the country in the first week of January. The government’s decision to cancel Nirav Modi and uncle Mehul Choksi passport is an attempt to force them to return.
  3. The CBI this week arrested PNB officials including Rajesh Jindal, the former head of the bank’s Brady House branch in Mumbai which was the epicentre of the fraud. Today, the CBI started questioning PNB managing director Sunil Mehta and an executive director in this case, according to news agency PTI.
  4. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley have promised to go after people who embezzle public funds with the full might of the state. Without taking any names, both leaders have also hit at sloppy bank managements and the banking sector regulator.
  5. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the question of who did what in the bank fraud scams will be probed. The government-funded bank had earlier sought to put the entire blame for the fraud at branch-level officials.
  6. The finance minister said periodic surfacing of bank frauds push to background the reforms and entire effort of making it easier to do business in India while the scars on the economy take front seat.
  7. The strong statements from the government come against a backdrop of spike in reports of bank fraud. Apart from the 3,700 crores Rotomac loan fraud that it was investigating, the CBI this week registered cases against a jeweller, a businessman and a public servant on complaints by three different banks this week, an official said on Saturday.
  8. A Delhi-based diamond jewellery exporting Dwarka Das Seth International has been accused of a 390 crores fraud by the Oriental Bank of Commerce. The state-run bank, which had approached the CBI in August last year, said its owner Sabhya Seth had shut shop and fled the country.
  9. Sabya Seth has been accused of round-tripping funds through fake companies abroad and utilised funds by discounting bills based on the letters of credit of either non-existent foreign banks or those with negative ratings.
  10. Congress president Rahul Gandhi cited Sabya Seth’s fraud case to renew his attack on PM Modi. "Under Modiji’s ‘Jan-Dhan Loot Yojana’, another scam! 390 crore, involving a Delhi-based jeweller. Same Modus operandi as Nirav Modi. Fake LOUs," Mr Gandhi tweeted. "Predictably, like Mallya and Nirav, this promoter too has disappeared while the Govt looked the other way," he added

Caught Kissing Minor On Facebook Live, Papon Quits As Reality Show Judge

New Delhi : On a day a police case was registered against Papon for "inappropriately kissing" a contestant in a children’s reality show, the singer-composer quit the show, saying "truth will prevail".

"Since I am in no mental state to fulfil most of my professional obligations, I have decided to step down as a judge on the show till the matter in which I have been falsely implicated is fully resolved and the investigations are over," the 41-year-old singer from Assam said in a tweet.

Today, the Guwahati police lodged a case against him after a complaint from the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

"The alleged accused person will be called and he will be interrogated. Lawful action will be taken" said Moneesh Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East, Guwahati.

"I have full faith in the judicial system and eventually the truth will prevail", the singer said.

Papon, who is a mentor and judge on ‘Voice India Kids’, was caught on a Facebook livestream smearing Holi colours on an 11-year-old girl, grabbing her face and kissing her. As outrage grew after the video went viral, Papon apologised yesterday but sought to blame the controversy on "faulty camera angles and an accidental move".

I might have done it spontaneously but in today’s environment, to touch a girl child, however innocent your thoughts are, is not advisable. I am sorry for that," said Papon.

Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Vidya Thakur, who spoke to the Mumbai police commissioner last night about the incident, has ordered a probe.

Supreme Court lawyer Runa Bhuyan has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights against Papon, saying that the singer has "committed sexual assault".

In a statement issued on Friday evening, Papon said he was an "extremely affectionate and expressive" person.

"To show affection for an 11-year old child who I have been mentoring for a while now is not an alien concept for me," he said.

The contestant’s father sided with Papon, calling him a "father figure" to his daughter.
"What you saw in the video is not intentional. It was just a moment of affection that is being portrayed otherwise," he said.

Papon is known for his popular numbers from Hindi films such as Barfi!, Befikre, Sultan, and Dum Laga Ke Haisha among others.

Don’t obstruct work, AAP urges Delhi govt officers

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party today urged government officers, protesting against the alleged attack on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by party MLAs, to not obstruct work as doing so would hit the governance.

Saurabh Bharadwaj, chief spokesperson of AAP’s Delhi unit, said the cases relating to the alleged assault on Prakash and the attack on minister Imran Hussain and Delhi Dialogue Commission’s vice-chairman Ashish Khetan are being investigated by the police.

“We appeal to the officers not to obstruct work as governance gets hit because of this,” Bharadwaj said.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues yesterday met Lt Governor Anil Baijal and sought his intervention to ease the government-bureaucracy tension.

A senior AAP leader said that the bureaucrats should not make its tussle with the Delhi government a matter of ego since their protest was hurting governance in Delhi.

Chief Secretary Prakash has alleged he was beaten by AAP MLAs Prakash Jarwal and Amanatullah Khan during a late-night meeting at Kejriwal’s residence on Monday.

The officers since then have boycotted meetings called by Delhi government ministers.

Demanding action in the case of attack on Hussain and Khetan, AAP leader Ashutosh said that party MP Sanjay Singh had sought time with the Delhi Police commissioner yesterday to raise the issue, but Singh has not heard from him yet.
