Love in a Sarkari set-up: 2015 IAS topper Tina Dabi to wed No 2 Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan

NEW DELHI: He may have lost the top rank of the Union Public Service Commission examination in 2015 to Tina Dabi but clearly he won her heart. Twenty-two year old Dabi will soon tie the knot with Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan who secured second rank in the UPSC exam.

Speaking from the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy for Administration in Mussoorie where she is undergoing training, Dabi+ said the couple was yet to set a wedding date, but the engagement would happen “very soon”.

Love blossomed in a very sarkari set-up when the two met at the department of personnel and training (DoPT) office in North Block for a felicitation function on May 11. “We met in the morning and by evening Aamir was at my door. Uske liye pehli nazar mein pyaar ho gaya (For him, it was love at first sight)”, she said. It was August by the time his charm swayed her.”But I thank Aamir every day for his perseverance. He is a wonderful person.”

Delhi: 10-year-old’s sketch in court convinces judge of her rape

NEW DELHI: Proving that a girl had been raped by her uncle, two years after the crime, would have been very difficult, but a Delhi trial court relied on the child’s crayon sketches to convict the accused and award him five years in jail.

The girl, who is 10 now and studies in a school, belongs to a broken family in Kolkata, but she suffered the most as an eight-year-old while staying with her aunt in Delhi. Her uncle, Akhter Ahmed, allegedly sexually assaulted her several times before she fled.

He was arrested last June, but his lawyer argued that the girl had been tutored to accuse him of rape and could not be considered a ‘competent witness’. The case turned unexpectedly when the girl, given paper and crayons to keep her occupied during the hearing, sketched an abandoned house, a girl holding balloons attached to entwined strings, and a dress lying beside her. She filled the drawings with ‘gloomy’ colours. Additional sessions judge Vinod Yadav regarded the sketches as the child’s impression of her ordeal.

When Delhi’s mountain of shame caved in

NEW DELHI: Garbage slides are not new to residents of Khoda Colony, living as they do just around 70 metres from the edge of the landfill at Ghazipur. But Friday was the first time that they saw such a massive chunk collapse on to the road skirting the mountains of trash. And as the accumulated muck thundered down, it swept a number of cars and bikes into the Kondli canal running parallel to the road. Two died, but many more could have lost their lives if not for the quick response of the local people
“I saw people struggling to stay afloat in the canal,” said Shamsher Ali, a meat seller. Like other bravehearts, Ali climbed the colony’s iron barricade and jumped into the water to rescue those trapped in the cars. He later recalled, “The water smelt horribly of the festering garbage, but I managed to pull out the driver of car that was bobbing in the water.” Long-time residents of the area said that the 10-feetdeep canal is usually filled to the brim during the rainy season. “We generally do not go for a swim during the monsoon due to the swift undercurrent,” said Ali. “However, today I did not think twice before plunging in. I know I could have drowned, but that did not seem too important at the time.”
