Passports to be issued in both Hindi and English, fee reduced for kids and senior citizens

New Delhi, June 23: Announcing big changes in Indian passport rules, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj on Friday said the newly introduced passports will be available in both languages, Hindi and English. The move seems to be intended towards making the passport more convenient for the users. Earlier, passports used to be issued in English language.

Swaraj further announced the applicants below the age of 8 and senior citizens will have to pay 10 per cent less fee for new passports. On the fiftieth anniversary of Passports Act, Swaraj said, “We have brought improvement in passport rules, services & focused on doorstep delivery.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that married women need to change their names even after their marriage to an Indian Passport. He further said that it is entirely up the discretion of women to use their father/mother/guardian’s name for renewing their passport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the new passport rules announced by Ministry of External Affairs for applying/ renewing passports for those women who had acquired their passport prior to their marriage. The ministry has decided to do away with Annexure K of Passport Rules 1980 to filled necessarily by married women, in case they failed to submit their marriage certificates. Similarly, the annexure was to be filled by women who have been separated but not divorced legally.

Men gain weight after marriage

London: Putting paid to the idea that married couples have better physical health because of increased social support, a new study has found that marriage actually makes men fatter, and the early days of fatherhood add to the problem.

The findings, published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, confirms the theory that people who are single but seeking marriage have more incentive to stay fit and make more effort than those who are married.

“It’s useful for individuals to understand which social factors may influence weight gain, especially common ones such as marriage and parenthood, so that they can make informed decisions about their health and well-being,” said Joanna Syrda from the University of Bath in England.

The study suggests that married men who want to avoid increases in Body Mass Index (BMI) should be mindful of their own changing motivation, behaviour and eating habits.

“Given major public health concerns about obesity, understanding more about the social science factors that can cause weight fluctuation is important,” Syrda added.

The study of heterosexual couples in the US, between 1999 and 2013, used data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics.

The researchers found that married men have a higher BMI than their non-married counterparts, adding approximately 1.4 kg to the scales.
